      Автор множества научных статей и шести фундаментальный монографических сводок по муравьям, три главных из которых я, с десяток лет тому назад, назвал "Мирмекологическая трилогия": Определитель родов муравьев мировой фауны (1994), Каталог муравьёв мировой фауны (1995) и Синопсис и классификация муравьёв (2003).
      Долгие годы Б.Болтон проработал (с 1971 по 2004 годы) в Лондоне в качестве таксономиста по муравьям в Британском Музее Естественной Истории (Department of Entomology at the British Museum (Natural History)), позже переименованного в The Natural History Museum, London. Именно сюда я ему писал письма и оттуда получал от него бандероли с последними его статьями. После отставки в 2004 году он тем не менее продолжил работать в качестве Scientific Associate of the Museum на ниве таксономии муравьёв и даже стал соавтором электроной энциклопедии муравьёв (CD, 2007).

      A NEW GENERAL CATALOGUE OF THE ANTS OF THE WORLD. Cambridge, Mass., Harvard University Press. 1995. pp.1-504.
      Полный таксономический каталог муравьев, в котором перечислены все научные латинские названия муравьев на всех уровнях от видового до подсемейства (family-group, suprageneric, genus-group, subgeneric, species-group, specific), которые были описаны с 1758 года до написания книги (учтены данные по 1993 год включительно). Указаны все синонимы и гомонимы, вымершие таксоны. Названы 9538 видов муравьёв (на 31 декабря 1993) из 16 современных подсемейств, 59 триб и 296 родов, и это не считая 4 вымерших подсемейства.
      Как писал Б.Болтон: "A name is forever, or at least as long as taxonomy continues," то есть, эти имена навсегда, или по-крайней мере, до тех пор пока существует таксономия.
      Книга получила награду от Ассоциации Американских Издателей:
Honorable Mention, 1995 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Award of the Association of American Publishers, Biological Sciences Category.

      Эта крупнейшая ревизия отдельной группы муравьёв в истории. И одной из труднейших триб мельчайших тропических муравьёв Dacetini, охотящихся на коллембол. Вместе с соавторами (Steve Shattuck и Brian Fisher), они описали самое большое число новых видов когда-либо опубликованное в одной работе (454 новых видов). Подробная синоптическая классификация семейства муравьев (Formicidae) с диагнозами всех 25 подсемейств. Даётся подробная систематика, таксономическая история и библиография всех подсемейств, триб и родов. Выделено 6 групп подсемейств, 21 современное (283 рода) и 4 вымерших подсемейства, устанавливается 7 новых подсемейств, из которых 2 описывается впервые на таком уровне, 1 восстанавливается и 5 возводится с уровня трибы. Описывается 8 новых триб, в том числе 6 впервые на таком уровне. Ещё 11 триб и 24 рода сводятся в синонимы, а 4 рода восстанавливаются в этом статусе.
