Polyrhachis muelleri has an unusual nesting behaviour: while the other leaf-nesting species of Polyrhachis hide their nests by weaving tog ether leaves or by incorporating detritus into the silk web, P. muelleri weaves pure silk nests on the lower surfaces of large moderately translucent leaves. Any dark contents of such nests are visible from above through the leaves or from below through the thin silk wall. A special adaptation against visually hunting predators has evolved: the larvae and pupae are green. Habitat selection, plant specifity, competition, nestbuilding, and other aspects of the behavioural ecology of P. muelleri are discussed.

P. australis Mayr, formerly a junior synonym of P. levior Roger, is declared a valid species. P. nox Donisthorpe is a n. syn. of P. australis Mayr; P. creusa chlorizans Forel & P. hecuba Forel are n. syn. of P. creusa Emery; P. heinlethii sophiae Forel is a n. syn. of P. heinlethii Forel; P. hookeri aerea Forel is a n. syn. of P. hookeri Lowne; P. gab aegra Forel is a n. syn. of P. lata Emery; P. aurea depilis Emery is a n. syn. of P. pallescens Mayr; P. sidnica perthensis Crawley is a n. syn. of P. phryne Forel; and P. barnardi Clark is a n. syn. of P. sexspinosa (Latreille). 7 Papuasian species are recorded for the first time from Australia: P. argenteosignata Emery, P. atropos Fr.Smith, P. denticulata Karawajew, P. mucronata Fr.Smith, P. obtusa Emery, P. reclinata Emery and P. semiobscura Donisthorpe. P. guerini Roger, P. levior Roger and P. lombokensis Emery, which were previously reported from Australia, apparently do not occur there. P. guerini is known only from New Caledonia and is apparently endemic there. A current synonymic list of the 114 valid named Australian Polyrhachis species is provided, and the position of all names in the traditional subgeneric arrangement is indicated.
