      Джордж Карлос Уилер (1897-1991) всю свою жизнь посвятил изучению морфологии, анатомии и фауны муравьев, особенно их личинкам. Уилер поступил в Техасский университет (Texas Christian University) в 1914 году с намерением стать преподавателем языка средней школы. Однако его давний интерес к биологии доминировал над его свободным временем и после перевода в Институт Риса (Rice Institute) в 1915 году Уилер начал заниматься биологией профессионально. Его первым преподавателем и научным руководителем был Julian Huxley, который сильно повлиял на Уилера в его желании стать профессиональным биологом. Когда Уилер закончил его дипломную работу в Институте Риса в 1918 году, он поступил на военную службу и посылался Йельскую Армейскую Лабораторную Школу (Yale Army Laboratory School). После он проходил его военную службу в Базомов Госпитале в Айове (Base Hospital in Camp Dodge, Iowa).

       В 1919 году, он начал работу дипломированного специалиста в области энтомологии в Институте Harvard's Bussey Institute. После того, как он закончил диссертацию и получил степень PhD, Уилер продолжил преподавательскую работу в Сиракузском Университете (Syracuse University), Университет Северной Дакоты (University of North Dakota) и Научно-исследовательский институте Пустыни (Desert Research Institute, University of Nevada).

       В 1986 году Уилер составил свою краткую автобиографию его ранней карьеры в области биологии озаглавленную "My Association with William Morton Wheeler". В этой работе, он описывает ярко причины, почему он стал биологом, его исследования и эксперименты в Институте Риса и в Harvard's Bussey Institute. В этой работе также Уилер собрал всю историю этих организаций, фотографии из экспедиций, биографии и заметки в память о тех людях с которыми он вместе трудился.

       Тема докторской диссертации посвящена его главной рабте всей жизни, исследовнию личинок муравьев. Именноэтому посвящены и абсолютное большинство его публикаий. Многие биологи знали о его уникальном интересе и привозили из дальних экспедиций необходимый для его работы и столь нежный материал. Итоговая монография "Ant larvae: review and synthesis", вышедшая в 1976 году остается единственным в своем роде исследованием преимагинальных стадий развития семейства муравьев.
