Opamyrma hungvuong, a new genus and species of ant related to Apomyrma (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Amblyoponinae)

"Zootaxa", 2008, Volume 1767, Pages 55-63 (May 2008)

Новый род морфологически очень близок к африканскому роду Apomyrma, но отличается комбинацией признаков у рабочих особей: preoccipital carina complete, almost encircling the head slightly before its posterior margin; clypeus posteriorly margined with a distinct continuous carina; petiole without a distinct anterior peduncle; abdominal segment III longer than IV, V and VI; segment VII longest among the segments III-VII; anteriormost part of abdominal sternite III produced anteriad to the same level as the anteriormost part of the tergite III; abdominal segment IV with differentiated presternite.

Key words: Vietnam, Formicidae, Amblyoponinae, Apomyrma, Opamyrma gen.n., Opamyrma hungvuong Yamane, Bui & Eguchi 2008

(Saux et al., 2004),
французского (Astruc et al., 2004) и
японского (Ohnishi et al., 2003).

Род Opamyrma сходен с родом Apomyrma по нескольким общим признакам: the outer face of the labrum bears peglike teeth; the frontal lobe is absent; the antennal socket is directed almost dorsad; the sternite of the petiole is reduced to a small posteroventral sclerite, bounded by the conspicuous tergo-sternal sutures; and the third abdominal segment above the helcium has a free anterior face.

Apomyrma): preoccipital carina complete, almost encircling the head slightly before its posterior margin; clypeus posteriorly margined with a distinct continuous carina; petiole without a distinct anterior peduncle; abdominal segment III longer than I V, V and VI; segment VII longest among the segments III -VII; anteriormost part of abdominal sternite III produced anteriad to the same level as the anteriormost part of tergite III; segment IV with differentiated presternite.

также Brown et al. 1971, Bolton, 1990, Masuko 1990, Ward 1994).

Aenictogitoninae Ashmead (new status), Apomyrminae Dlussky & Fedoseeva (new status), и Leptanilloidinae Bolton (new subfamily). A second analysis of these better delimited 17 subfamilies resulted in 24 equally most parsimonious trees. All trees showed a basal division of extant Formicidae into two groups, the first containing (Myrmicinae, Pseudomyrmecinae, Nothomyrmeciinae, Myrmeciinae, Formicinae, Dolichoderinae, Aneuretinae) and the second the remaining subfamilies. Clades appearing within these groups included the Cerapachyinae plus 'army ants', the Nothomyrmeciinae plus Myrmeciinae, the 'formicoid' subfamilies (Aneuretinae + Dolichoderinae + Formicinae), and the Old World army ants (Aenictinae + Aenictogitoninae + Dorylinae), but relationships within the last two groups were not resolved, and the relative positions of the Apomyrminae, Leptanillinae and Ponerinae remained ambiguous. Moreover, a bootstrap analysis produced a consensus tree in which all branches were represented in proportions much lower than 95%. A reconstruction of the ground plan of the Formicidae indicated that the most specialized of all recent ants are the members of the subfamily Dorylinae and the least specialized ones are the monotypic Apomyrminae.

(Zombitse Forest, western Madagascar). Remarkable features of its morphology include: (i) absence of a petiole in dorsal view (abdominal tergum 3 lacking a dorsally differentiated pretergite), (ii) gaster large and expanded posteriorly, all terga and sterna unfused and without constrictions, (iii) absence of eyes, and (iv) presence of a very large sting (larger, in relation to body size, than that of any other known ant). Adetomyrma does not possess any of the derived features heretofore said to characterize the existing ant subfamilies. Morphological evidence suggests, however, that it is cladistically a member of the ponerine tribe Amblyoponini despite the absence of apomorphic abdominal characters (tergosternal fusion of abdominal segments 3 and 4) seen in all other Ponerinae and in the more inclusive poneroid group' of subfamilies. Whether Adetomyrma shows primitive absence of such characters or secondary reversal to an unfused state has important implications for the higher phylogeny of the ants. There is insufficient evidence to choose decisively between these two alternatives, but in either case the monophyly of the ant subfamily Ponerinae becomes doubtful.
